2011 Papers

Conco Systems Inc.

Deposit Removal-Pressurized Liquid Nitrogen

-The use of ultra high pressure liquid nitrogen (LN2) can quickly and safely remove the most tenacious deposits in petrochemical and refinery process equipment, without risk of cross-contamination or production of secondary waste streams.

Al Hovland, CONCO Systems

FosterWheeler

Modular-design Sulfur Block in DCU

- Design criteria, environmental requirements, process selection and design. Highlights of equipment design and fabrication, with emphasis on the modularization of equipment, piping, and controls will be discussed. A review of the unit start-up and operation experience will be presented.

Scott Kafesjian, FosterWheeler

Structural Preservation

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

- Safety of plant personnel in SRU has been a primary concern for Owners. Presentation focuses on how a new technology, GPR, can be applied, how it works-discussing its strengths and limitations and how facilities can safely pre-plan using this technology.

Tom Kline, Structural Preservation Systems

Utilizing the Checkerwall as Static Mixer to Improve Reaction Furnace Performance

- This paper will review the modeling methodology developed to evaluate various configurations of VectorWall mixing checkerwalls and determine which designs offer the best combination of mixing and pressure drop. A number of CFD mixing videos will be run.

Jeffrey Bolebruch, Blasch Precision Ceramics

2010 Sulfur & Amine Papers

Journey to Zero Injuries

- Compelling stories of industrial plant construction and what has led us to be proponents of the Zero Injury Concepts.

Refractory Lining Improvements for O2 Enriched Furnace Service
- Project philosophy used to assure implementation of new refractory design features. Describes technical improvements to lining system. Experiences and perspectives of three parties: process licensor-Ortloff; owner-Refiner; contractor-Thorpe. Abstract

Treatment Options for Molten Sulfur Storage and Transfer Vents
- Molten sulfur has complicated handling, storage transfer issues. User must define requirements, work with provider that will design and implement a system that meets economic, safety, regulatory, and process requirements in an integrated package. Abstract

In-house Control Integrated System for Accidental H2S Leak in Oil Refineries
- The maintenance of safety in Oil Refineries, regarding accidental H2S leaks to the atmosphere. The principal strategy is the local sheltering to named Safety Units. Three models of these Safety Units have been developed to deal with this kind of emergency. Abstract

Reducing Differential Pressure - Amine Regenerator
- Refined Technologies worked together with LyondellBasell to develop a plan that reduced differential pressure in the Regenerator tower by 50% and returned rich amine feed rate to plan in less than 8 hours using Strategic Chemistry.

Optimizing refinery amine system performance without capital .
- Many amine systems faced additional large capital expenditures for regeneration equipment. Upgrading amine solvent to formulated MDEA products allowed units to maximize amine circuit efficiency with solvent & operation approaches for cost savings. Abstract

Continuous Evolution of Technology Delivers Safety and Performance Improvements
- Traditional approaches to Clear for Entry, Fouling Removal from Exchangers/Reactors, Waste Removal/Waste Treatment; then introduction of advanced technologies/methods for safe and fast results. Case studies validate technologies, lead to best practices. Abstract

Sulfur Tail Gas Thermal Oxidizer Systems
- Special considerations in the design and of Sulfur Tail Gas incinerators are discussed with special emphasis on common misunderstandings about sulfur tail gas incinerators and design pitfalls to avoid.

Safety of the Environment/Safety of the Operator-Closed Vent Sampling

Sulfur Unit Decontamination to Facilitate Maintenance
- ULI has developed methodology to conduct equipment decontamination on sour water strippers, Claus units, tail gas and amine units. Several case studies showing successful, efficient decontaminated of these process units will be presented. Abstract

Capacity for in-Ground Reinforced Concrete Sulfur Pits
- Sulfur Pits Dealing with Changes: Strategies and Case Histories will be detailed to provide insight into the Industry's Best Practices regarding changes in Sulfur Storage and Containment, thus meeting Owner/Operator Opportunities.

80 Days to Operator Competency
- Operator competency, the existing gap between capabilities and demands, the consequences of that gap and methods for closing the gap.

Sultraps meet EPA Challenges
- SOS practices environmental prevention through the introduction of the SULTRAPtm.

SOS practices environmental prevention.

Check back later; presentations will be listed above that we are considering.  If you are interested in presenting, review the Call For Presentations and contact us.

Breakout Work Groups

We know that you like to hear how other refiners are solving operations challenges and handling safety situations, so we offer these Breakout Discussion Groups focused on:

Minimizing emissions during a startup

Amine filtration

Exchanger leak detection.

...plus additional issues brought up by the delegates during the breakout group

Sulfur Incidents Review

An interactive experience where the presenters share Stories/Case Histories of Sulfur Unit Incidents.  They then engage the audience in possible outcomes, preventions and solutions.  Then summarizes audience recommendations and finishes each incident with Lessons Learned.  Find out why in spite of PHA and HAZOP these common incidents continue to occur and what you can do about them.  Very informative and practical.

If you can prevent one incident, you've got your money's worth from this presentation alone. This will be a highlight of the conference.

We'll add papers as they are confirmed.  We are ALWAYS open to additional presentations, near misses and shared learnings by refiners.
